Two months grace period for tachograph retrofitting

23 December 2024

The European Commission recommended that EU Member States apply a two-month guidance period from 1 January 2025 to 28 February 2025. During this grace period, transport operators who have not yet retrofitted their vehicles with the Smart Tachograph Version 2 (G2V2) will not face sanctions. Instead, efforts will be made to further raise their awareness of the retrofit requirement.

The IRU welcomes this decision reached in the Road Transport Committee to introduce a two-month grace period for the EU’s upcoming legal retrofitting deadline. According to the IRU, this provides critical support operators urgently need. This measure aims to help operators and manufacturers address the retrofit backlog and minimise disruption to cross-border transport. For the

industry it means: Operational continuity and sSupport for compliance which provides transport operators with additional time to retrofit vehicles while maintaining access to key markets. IRU states it also improves industry collaboration, strengthening cooperation between operators, workshops, and policymakers to meet legislative requirements efficiently.
